The K-Academic Diffusion Research Center at the Center for International Studies, Inha University, has published an English textbook titled 『Korean Studies in Identity Politics and Public Diplomacy: Bridging Politics, Culture, and Society』.
The K-Academic Diffusion Research Center has been dedicated to establishing Korean Studies as a field within the social sciences, with a particular focus on identity politics and public diplomacy, in order to make Korean Studies more accessible to global audiences. The Center annually produces ten online courses on related themes and disseminates them worldwide through K-MOOC. This textbook is the output of accumulated lecture content and research outcomes developed through these sustained efforts.
The book offers a comprehensive examination of how Korea’s political, cultural, and social identities have been formed and transformed over time. By integrating traditional political theories with non-traditional analytical approaches organizationally, it enables readers to gain a multidimensional understanding of social change in Korea. In particular, the volume reinterprets Korea’s global role by focusing on the intersections of domestic politics, international relations, and public diplomacy.
Comprising five chapters, the textbook explores the formation and institutional foundations of modern Korean politics in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 analyzes the history and characteristics of Korea’s foreign relations through its interactions with neighboring countries. Chapter 3 highlights Korea’s status and role on the global stage, while Chapter 4 addresses contemporary issues such as identity politics, multiculturalism, and social change in Korea. The final chapter examines global Korean communities by focusing on cultural narratives and community formation, and explores the potential expansion of transnational Korean Studies.
Adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates perspectives from political science, international relations, sociology, and cultural studies, this textbook bridges the gap between Korean Studies and the social sciences while proposing new analytical frameworks for existing scholarly discussions. Written in English, it is designed to be accessible to a broad global readership, regardless of academic background or prior knowledge of Korea.
In addition, each chapter includes a QR code linking to related K-MOOC online lectures, enabling integrated learning through both textual and audiovisual materials. This feature allows readers to engage more deeply with key issues surrounding Korean identity, public diplomacy, and cultural exchange.
Through the publication of this textbook, the K-Academic Diffusion Research Center aims to share new possibilities for contemporary Korean Studies as a social science—and for global Korean Studies more broadly-with readers around the world.
