Inha Center for International Studies(ICIS) - Mongolian National University, Department of International Relations co-hosted international academic conference in Ulaanbaatar and interchanged various ideas and topics such as the diffusion of Korean studies, security in East Asia, identity, and diplomacy between both countries
On June 5 (Thursday), ICIS and the National University of Mongolia jointly held an international academic conference under the theme of "Rising Regional Changes, Challenges and Cooperation in East Asia" in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
This conference wad designed to show the outcomes of academic exchanges and cooperation between the two institutions, which have been going on since the early 2000s. In particular, the implications of Korean studies through the 'K Academic Diffusion Research Institute Project' were highlighted as the central agenda in terms of the globalization and public diplomacy.
The conference consisted of three sessions, and Korean and Mongolian scholars viewed the present and future of East Asia from various perspectives through a wide range of presentations and discussions on the diffusion of Korean studies to Mongolia, East Asian security, identity and diplomacy, and soft power etc.
Professor Baasankhuu Ganbaatar of the National University of Mongolia delivered the presentation on a case study of the K-MOOC online lecture "Korea and International Relations" developed by Inha University's K-Academic Diffusion Research Center by highlighting the practical effects of K-academic diffusion. Professor Ganbaatar explained, "There are more than 330 students majoring in international relations at the National University of Mongolia who took the lecture between 2023 and 2025, and the satisfaction, participation rate, and completion rate of the students were all positively evaluated."
The K-Academic Diffusion Research Center, which was established in 2021 under ICIS. Through the K-MOOC platform, online courses dealing with the field of political and diplomatic studies as Korean studies have been produced and distributed in multilingual languages such as English and Korean, and are provided free of charge to learners around the world.
In addition, many scholars were eager to deliver the presentations on a wide range of topics such as international legal issues on regional security in East Asia, Mongolia's diplomatic mediation strategy, comparison of cultural diplomacy cases in Africa, the formation of the identity of Goryeo migrants, China's economic diplomacy, and democracy in the digital age, thereby providing a meaningful time to exchange various national experiences and perspectives.
Lee Jean Young, the director of ICIS, said of the conference, "It was a meaningful opportunity to academically shed light on the various regional and international issues facing Korea and Mongolia and seek future cooperation," adding, "We will continue to prosper in the international cooperation, education, diplomacy, and culture in the near future."
The meeting was attended by about 20 scholars, including academic and diplomatic officials from both countries.
